  • Visual Processing Laboratory

The Visual Processing Laboratory has an approximate area of 28m², which is divided in two rooms. The largest one is where both the reunions of the Language, Teaching and Cognition (LTC) group and the pre-tests with the researches participants, as well as the orientations of Postgraduate and Scientific Initiation students. This room contains a large table for reunions, chairs, writing desks, a Epson S10 projector and a glass dry erase board. The other room is where the data collection happens. To perform that, the room is equiped with a RED Eye Tracker from german manufacturer SMI. A DELL Precision M4800 laptop, a DELL monitor and a infrared machine composes the remaining equipment. This tracker is considered to be fast, since it can collect an eye movement data each 2ms. The tracker provides three softwares: BeGaze, iView X and Experiment Center. There are also in the room: three appropriate chairs for data collection, an iron locker full of research books and three tables. For the statistic data analysis is utilized a HP Elitebook Folio 9470M ultrabook. For qualitative data and mixed researches method, the licence for MAXQDA – a professional data analysis software comes in handy. It is able to deal with all non-structured data such as interviews, scientific papers, multimidia files, quizes, twitter data, among many other possibilities.

The eye movements are collected with a stationary eye tracker that allows a free head movement for 40cm horizontally and 20cm vertically, as well as a distance between 60cm and 80cm. It’s sampling frequency is 500Hz, which means, it generates a sample each 2ms (considered fast), and a spacial resolution of 0.03°. The data collection is made in front of a 22″ screen with up to 9 callibrating points. The equipment has a high precision in the eye position (0.4°) and low latency (<4ms). The eye position is calculated based on the corneal reflex and the pupil position. The microsaccades are automatically grouped in one fixation and the blinks are corrected automatically by the integrated software in the equipment (SMI iView RED System, Sendo Motoric Instruments G.m.b.H.). For the researches that need more data accuracy, there is also a head-chin support available.
